Middle Eastern Black Tents This tent is based on the black tents of the desert nomads. It is a very aerodynamic tent made from canvas, not goat hair, so they are a light tan color. Our tents are made in the Arab style, with tension bands that distribute the stresses across the length of the tent. These tents were used in Arabia, Iraq, and from Syria westward, as well as by Bedouin tribes. While walls were traditionally attached to the roof by long metal pins, or toggles and loops, our walls are attached to the tent by s-hooks and d-rings. Variations on these tents include the size of the tent, as well as the number and placement of the tension bands, and the walls being separate or part of the tent body. The Algerian has doors that are part of the tent, with a total of five tension bands (three main and two minor). The Bedouin has separate doors, one central tension band (called a triga) and additional tension bands on the corners. The Berber has doors that are separate, and a total of five tension bands (three main and two minor).
This style of tent is highly flexible in design, so call us for other sizes or styles you are interested in. We dont recommend any tent smaller than 18 x 22 (which has an interior of approximately 14 x 18), unless you really like it cozy. Remember that when ordering this style of tent it is measured as a flat piece of canvas, not usable space, as other tents are. Please send us a drawing with dimensions for any custom order. Not all tents of this style were black. In fact, many had colored stripes of dyed material to show tribal affiliation, and tension bands were sometimes colored as well as the back walls. You can paint on this fabric with a watered down artists acrylic paint (do not use any oil based paints) with stripes, or your own designs. Artists' acrylic paint can be purchased from any local art supply store.
